Berkayel Staircase
June 2020

During our early visits, we noticed one particular flight of stairs in Berkayel. It connects a whole neighborhood, especially those living in the houses scattered along its edges. However, the mostly elderly users are prone to trip or slip on its steep slopes, different stair heights and broken steps. It is also a very long stairway of at least a hundred steps, ill-equipped for the elderly’s physical challenges. As such Nusaned’s team, contractor Mouhamed Fatfat and focal point Mazen Karhani, took on the challenge of the rehabilitation works in a matter of days with the help of volunteers. They rectified the slopes, built two resting platforms and placed a couple of benches in shaded areas where people could sit and rest. As soon as the rehabilitation works were done, and with paint donations from Nusaned’s corporate partner Colortek, the colorful strokes of «Sounnaa El Hayet» turned the stairway into a brighter place that the residents could enjoy and positively identify with. Residents were also engaged with the artists in the selection of colours and drawings. In parallel «Kalima crew », street artists, transformed a wall on the main road into a vivid representation of the Nusaned slogan «United for Sustainable Living». This slogan is a reflection of hope, encouraging the spirit of support and spreading the importance of sustainability. The rehabilitation of this public space combined with street art is transformative; not only in the physical sense, a wall or a stairway, but also in transforming the spirit of the community.
