Food Security and Agriculture

Crops that Yield

At Nusaned, we recognize the vital connection between food security and agriculture in fostering resilient communities. We understand that ensuring access to nutritious food and promoting sustainable agricultural practices are crucial for community well-being. Through our programs, we aim to empower individuals and communities by enhancing food security and promoting sustainable agriculture practices.  By investing in initiatives that address the root causes of food insecurity, we work towards reducing hunger, improving nutrition, and creating long-term resilience.  Through support to farmers, education on sustainable farming techniques, and fostering local food systems, we strive to create a nourishing environment that empowers communities and enhances their overall well-being. Together, we can build resilient communities through food security and agriculture, ensuring a sustainable future for all.

The Challenge

Lebanon is blessed with fertile lands at different altitudes and micro-climates that yield a variety of crops. However, even with its potential for agricultural abundance and access to fresh, local food, impoverished families across the country are still left with no immediate and affordable access to a reliable source of nourishment.

Some of the poorest regions in Lebanon are almost entirely dependent on agriculture which faces major challenges including significant pressures on natural resources, such as farmlands, rangelands, groundwater and forests, and current agriculture practices that have a negative environmental impact, such as deforestation and soil degradation.

These challenges are further compounded with economic ones related to reduced regional exports. This can be specifically seen in the export of fresh produce, where trade routes to the GCC and Iraq have been disrupted and imports from neighboring countries have increased.

How we Support

From research, finance, training and production, to quality control, certification, marketing and export, the Crops That Yield program aims at developing sustainable rural economies by supporting farmers through the entire supply chain process.

Our initiative at Nusaned is based on our evaluation of the challenges that the Lebanese agricultural sector faces, and developed in consultation and coordination with heads of municipalities, local communities, Ministry of Agriculture representatives, local Chambers of Commerce representatives, agricultural engineers and experts, as well as local and international NGOs.

Priority is given to:

  • Communities with limited access to nutritious food
  • Areas affected by food insecurity and high poverty rates
  • Small-scale farmers and agricultural workers with limited resources
  • Vulnerable groups including women, children, elderly individuals, and persons with disabilities
  • Regions with degraded ecosystems and environmental challenges

Your support enables us to implement these vital programs, making a tangible difference in the lives of those most in need. Together, we can build a sustainable and equitable food system, ensuring food security for all and creating a healthier future for communities and the environment.

Food Security and Improved Nutrition

We aim to educate rural and urban communities on the importance of balanced and healthy diets, and help them create a living income through a variety of projects in animal husbandry and land cultivation with a range of starter kits.

Honey Bee Starter Kit, including basic material and equipment, and technical training and support in beekeeping.

Chicken Coop Starter Kit, including basic coop construction material, hens and an initial amount of feed, as well as guidelines, training and support.

Vegetable Garden Starter Kit, including seeds and topsoil.

Fruit Tree Starter Kit, including trees and topsoil.

Economic Development and Resilience

While subsistence provides goods and nutrition for the time being, an active marketplace creates incomes, savings, education, employment and opportunities for communities to retain their people, develop new skills and increase earning potential. Nusaned supports farmers to grow and scale up their businesses in a sustainable way through a variety of initiatives.

Providing skills training in order to attain new and more profitable markets by giving farmers the skills to improve product type, quality, quantity, and delivery.

Providing innovative farming equipment, supplies and logistics for individual or collective use to improve production, storage, and delivery and help farmers manage and scale up their businesses. This includes providing access to quality feed and other supplies at lower prices, organized transportation, and centralized warehousing.

Linking to robust markets and to partners to increase the farmers’ long-term profits. We help farmers cope with more formal markets by providing them with a variety of services including financial support and access to credit facilities, as well as larger contracts with more significant customers.

Improving production yields through supporting collaboration and cooperation among farmers to organize their individual small land parcels into larger plots to enhance the farming process and optimize results, providing equipment and technical support from seed to harvest. We also help farmers improve productivity and maximize yield by planting alternative crops that are challenging to harvest or in short supply.

Environment Sustainability

Our projects are formulated to balance the needs of agriculture with environmental preservation and improvement. We do this in partnership with local NGOs by:

Supporting farmers with expertise on how to integrate climate-smart agricultural practices to increase resilience and crop production.

Promoting waste management by raising community awareness and implementing sorting and composting initiatives.

Greening spaces through promoting forest protection and regeneration as well as initiating tree planting schemes.

Women’s Empowerment

We believe that women-led smallholder farming is the future of our economy. By investing in women farmers and business owners and supporting them with the tools and expertise they need to make their businesses thrive, we empower them to have more control over their incomes. That income is usually reinvested into their families, creating overall improvements in nutrition, children’s education and the entire family’s healthcare.
